Dr Valentina Shaw

Obstetrics and Gynaecology Specialist

She aims to improve the quality of life for all Women and thrives for excellence in provision of care.

Valentina was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She completed her medical degree in Montevideo, Uruguay in July 2001. Migrating to New Zealand in 2002, she obtained registration as a doctor in New Zealand in 2006. She worked in Auckland City Hospital and Middlemore Hospital as a Junior Doctor and an O&G Registrar while she completed her Postgraduate diploma in Obstetrics and Medical Gynaecology at the University of Auckland.

In 2009 she was accepted into the O&G training programme for the Royal Australasian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology FRANZCOG.

In 2017,  Valentina completed Specialist training obtaining the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She has been a registrar in National’s Women Hospital, Middlemore and Rotorua Hospitals before settling in Taranaki where she has found a home. She also has acquired Locum experience working in Timaru, Lower Hutt, Masterton and Nelson hospitals.

Current work

Currently working at Taranaki DHB, she enjoys the collegiality and challenges of emergency Obstetrics and Gynaecology care. In private practice, she enjoys the opportunity of being able to engage more closely with her patients and their continuity of care.

Valentina has a special interest in pelvic pain, laparoscopic surgery, and high risk obstetrics. She is a general gynaecologist with fellowship experience in urogynaecology and special interest in colposcopy and vulvo-vaginal disease. She is experienced in pelvic pain and abnormal uterine bleeding.  

Another strong interest lies in the areas of equality and women’s rights. She aims to improve the quality of life for all Women and thrives for excellence in provision of care, relying  on up-to-date evidence based medicine.  She is passionate about a whole woman approach to achieve wellness in the transitional periods of a women’s life such as adolescence and menopause.

Interests

Valentina lives with her husband and two teenage children and enjoys outdoor activities including running and playing tennis. She has a personal interest in education around Women’s Health issues and completed level 4 of Te Reo Māori at the Te Wānanga o Aoteroa Rangiātea Campus in 2019.
